Here's a couple of illustrations done for Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. "A Stroll to Botany Bay" is a story about a British soldier in search of his beloved throughout the Australian wilderness. "Dancer in the Storm" is about all the murder, intrigue, and treachery that surrounds a Cotton Club dancer (story set in the 1940s). Thanks to Cindy Tiberi for the assignments!

Elidé was a very naughty girl. She smothered her ill father, drowned a family friend, shot her husband and brother in-law. All of this for full control of her family's estate. But justice was served. While trying to kill the her sister (her last family member), Elidé had a heart attack and was paralyzed for life.

The Society of Illustrators just informed me that "Bear Attack" from the Advertising show will be part of this year's Illustrators 52 Traveling show. The Society travels the annual show each year. Only 40 pieces from the entire show are chosen to travel. This exhibition will be touring different galleries and schools a...cross the United States. Casual Chat 2: My most FAQ

Definitely the most frequently question I get is: "How do you pronounce your name?" You would think I go by Jorge (Spanish pronunciation), but actually I go by George. This is because my name it's actually of Portuguese origin and not Spanish. It is written identically, but it's pronounced differently. My last name is toughest one for the majority (including Spanish speakers). So the Portuguese to English pronunciation goes like this: Jorge (Georjay) and Mascarenhas (Mascarenyas). George Mascarenyas would be the "correct" way I'm called. Let the jokes begin...

Casual Chat 1 (Illustration inspiration)

Looking back at my art school days there were five artists that really inspired me to be an illustrator. These artists have been around way before I was born, and I never heard of them until I picked up a Society of Illustrators Annual in 2002. Their paintings blew me away instantly! I began to understand what it meant to be a top illustrator. Mark English, Gary Kelley, Greg Manchess, Bernie Fuchs(RIP) and Skip Liepke were known to me as the "Big Five" (a term I used for myself). I used to try to replicate their painting style (with no avail), photocopy and read their Step by Step interviews, and collect all of their books. Some people would even ask "Why do you like all these old school folks?" I had the privilege to meet Gary Kelley and Mark English in person, and as a big art nerd, had them autograph some of their books. Gary was very kind to give me one of his life drawings (which hangs my studio wall). I saw Greg Manchess at the last Society's opening, but was too shy approach him and strike a conversation.
After all these years they are still producing a ton of great work. Their timeless longevity as artists will always be an inspiration for me...

I was sitting in my studio for the last two days bemoaning about failed experiments, and for sure today was no different. Then I got a call from Anelle Miller from the Society of Illustrators. She notified me that "Bear Attack (Advertising)" and "Let The Right One In (Uncomissioned)" made it into this year's annual! I'm honored to be part of the show again! Special thanks to the judges!

Inspired on Guayaquil's main cemetery. An interesting fact of this "place of peace," that it was originally used to bury the foreign inhabitants of Ecuador. It was founded in 1841.
